SUSTAINABILITY AS A BUSINESS STRATEGY, NOT A BUZZWORD

For more than 140 years, Levi Strauss & Co. has been creating beloved denim jeans for consumers all over the world. And since the beginning, they’ve always believed in leading with responsibility. Today, their mission is to become the most sustainable apparel company in the world, and that starts by looking at every step of their supply chain to see how the company could produce in more responsible and efficient ways – from the cotton that goes into their jeans, to encouraging sustainable behavior once those jeans land in a consumer’s closet. It goes beyond special sustainable collections to embedding sustainability into the way products are made and deepening how they market sustainability to the consumer. This session will focus on how the company started in sustainability before it was in fashion to do so, the lessons learned over the years, and how it has continued to deliver on brand promises while offering up a more sustainable product for consumers.

UNAPOLOGETIC: THE NEW ERA OF COMMUNICATIONS & MARKETING FOR GLOBAL ISSUES

The cause marketing community often finds itself torn between the need to tell its story and the perception that effective marketing pulls attention and resources from its core missions. In a new media era, the need for savvy, high-impact communications is greater than ever. We all know that the stakes are high: global priorities like hunger, health and stability are in desperate need of attention. At the same time, the rules of the game have changed: Movements are born and grow with greater ease and the attention span of the worldwide media and population is fast and fickle. Jennifer will identify new trends in this new era. She will talk about the need for “unapologetic” communications strategies in order for brands, movements, activists and institutions to succeed in their marketing and engagement. She will tell the story of the new “Global Goals” as a case study for what worked, and what hasn’t yet, in this arena. Her presentation will lay out emerging themes from winning campaigns and effective efforts that have caught the attention of juries in Cannes, governments around the world, and the global community at the United Nations. From local school assemblies to the General Assembly, this new era of communications and marketing holds new promise for everybody.
